And We Are Off....

Here we go my first blog on the topic of cancer! This topic is hard for me to talk about but maybe through this blog it will help me open up and find some kind of ease.

Cancer to me is something that I can say I HATE! I am the type of person that believes hate is a strong word but in this situation hate is the perfect word to describe cancer for me. Besides feeling hate when I hear the word cancer, for some reason I always think “BELIEVE”. Repeating the word believe is something I have done since cancer first had an impact on my life. When I heard the word cancer for the first time I was 6 years old and since I was so young the only thing I knew about cancer was that it made my father very sick and caused much stress on the family. As I got older, I started to get a better understanding of cancer but my feelings and thoughts about it still remain the same. Believe and Hate.
For some reason growing up I had a mindset that no one else in my life would get cancer; why I had this mindset, I have not a clue. But when I was 20, cancer yet again affected my life when my mother was diagnose and since then, three years ago, there have been several other family members and a friend that have been diagnose. As my blog comes together, I will reveal the stories.
In this blog, I am revealing my thoughts, emotions, and stories on how cancer has had an impact on my life. Every story and diagnoses are so different from each other, if you have comments or a story of your own please share, I would love to hear your stories.

  1. Back in 1982, my mother-in-law to be was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through her treatments she was blessed with the friendship of others going through the same hardship. Back then, the news of cancer in any location was viewed as a death sentence. This was not acceptable to this woman. Speaking with her today about it, she'll admit that it wiped her out completely, but she had children to raise and the father to those children was off doing his own thing at the time. She didn't, as she puts it, "have time" to let this cancer thing beat her. The chemo, the radiation, the pain, the exhaustion, the news of the death of her newfound friends in treatment. BELIEVE? Absolutely! This woman is still with us; a fighter determined to beat this thing against the odds of the day.

  2. Thank you for sharing your story, means a lot. I am glad to hear that your mother-in-law won her war against cancer. She sounds like a strong woman that puts her family first. She sounds like a great woman and a fighter indeed. Thank you for your story again.

  3. Heath, I applaud your strength to be so open about the difficulties that cancer has placed on all of you. My wife and I have certainly had our share of challenges through both families: cancer, diabetes, and heart attacks have shortened the life of several dear family members - long before they should have been taken from us all.

We have always responded by focusing our love and our attention on those who are still alive and with us today while finding private moments to celebrate our cherished memories of those so close to our hearts that have passed: my brother, my mother, and numerous aunts and uncles; my wife's father.

  4. Matt, thank you so much for your comment. I am sorry for those you have lost. Your wife and yourself have a great mindset of focusing on who is still currently with us and cherish the memories of those we have lost. Memories we can always cherish.

  5. I like your start here. Curious why you chose the background you did? It has a medical feel to it (cellular-ish) was that on purpose? You might consider adding a tagline with or the word Cancer in the title ... depending on if you want search engines to find the blog easier?

  6. Plussizepregnancy, thank you for your post. I have add a tag line, not sure how I feel about it yet but I always have the option to change it. For your background question, I pick it because I like how its mostly black and the orange adds a special of color. Its simple and I am all about the simple look.

  7. Our blogs are supposed to be evolving... so I think you have the right idea "try it out"... you might end up rewording or eliminating it etc. I was thinking it might benefit readers who don't know what your blog is about... the believing part comes right though... but in the context of what does not right out of the gate. Taglines make for a nice quick scan as a reader.
